Q: What are some Advantages and Disadvantages of Open and Closed Enrollment?
A: Advantages to Open Enrollment are:
- You may purchase a membership for one if budgets are tight, there are no minimums.
- You have the benefit of group interaction, learning and networking across other organizations; such as non-profits, retail, professional, and/or government employees to mention only a few. It is a creative learning environment through a kind of cross pollination.
Disadvantages to Open Enrollment are:
- You must be sensitive to others participation and not hijack ALL discussions on single issues.
- You must learn to trust others outside your organization to some extent, (Not Really a Bad Thing).
Advantages of Closed Enrollment are:
- Limits discussion and focus to only your organization and your staff. (Good and Bad)
- Allows for rapid deployment of New ideas, Processes and Systems specific to your organization.
Disadvantages of Closed Enrollment are:
- Requires a minimum number of memberships.
- Does not allow fresh objective eyes and participation. Other participants are not too close to the issues and you may benefit from ALL participants by having an outsiders objective evaluation.
